Sunfish
Overview
The Sunfish design originated from a request by Royce to create a fish board that would complement the Sea Shepherd keel fins from Future fins. Despite initial skepticism about designing a board around a fin template, the challenge was embraced. The key was to refine the shape to distribute the load between the outline and rails, rather than solely on the fins, especially given the size of removable keel fins.
Royce's 6'3" prototype proved to be magical, even if too large for the shaper. The design truly came to life with a 5'8" under Chris Del Moro's feet, achieving a balanced combination of design elements. Further testing revealed the original Sea Shepherd fin template was too large, leading to the adoption of Future's smaller K2 fiberglass version. Chris's annual trip to Australia, where he surfed powerful waves with Dave Rastovich, showcased the board's performance. Dave, impressed by the Sunfish's glide and control across various wave types, received a quiver of Sunfishes ranging from 5'8" to 6'9". Dave prefers Mark Richards style fins, indicating the design's adaptability to different, less keel-oriented fin templates.
The general sizing rule for the Sunfish is to go two inches longer than your traditional keel. Its width allows for customized thickness while maintaining design integrity. Customers can order shorter and thicker boards to suit their needs or contact for custom recommendations.
