Micks Tape
Overview
An asymmetrical collaborative by Matt Biolos and Donald Brink, the Micks Tape was designed for Mick Fanning to ride in the Maldives for STAB's #ElectricAcidSurfboardTest (EAST) 2022. The challenge was to create a compact board, restricted to a 5'3" length limit, that could deliver controllable power and handle diverse waves. The design aims to provide maximum motor with minimum waste, allowing Mick to perform precise arcs and fit into tight creases. For the average surfer, the Micks Tape is a complement to their quiver, offering a balance for progressive surfing in the small board section. It's designed to be stance-specific, leveraging toe-side approach and balancing heel-side drive, meaning it's optimized for either left or right-hand waves depending on your stance. While Mick Fanning, at almost 5'10", rides the 5'3" Micks Tape at 28.5 liters, the board's design allows for increased overall size to provide more support and reasonable widths. This makes it manageable in average conditions and crowded line-ups, while still maintaining a short rail line for easy steering, catering to modestly skilled surfers seeking comfort and performance. This collaboration represents a blend of known design principles and innovative application, creating a unique "Mixed Tape" for surfers to enjoy.
